Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Fans in Ethiopia have been putting a brave face on their World Cup dream setback. The team went down 2-1 to Nigeria over the weekend, the first leg of their World Cup qualifier. But supporters in Addis Ababa remain confident their team can rise to the occasion in leg two.

A match full of drama – which the home team dominated for the first hour – even scoring first. The Super Eagles took it, thanks to two goals from Emmanuel Emenike. But for local fans, the match was proof Ethiopian football is in a class of its own.

“I wasn’t that disappointed because we are very less in our football standing compared to them. And I have also seen how they are not that tough. I appreciate our players. They have showed our brilliant football to the world.” Ephrem Hailu, Ethiopian Football Fan said.

“I feel so sad. But it’s ok. We have got another chance so we still have another chance.” Kalkidan Shifefraw, Ethiopian Football Fan said.

Some Nigerian fans conceded the game had been close.

“The Ethiopian team has improved than what we used to know. The Ethiopian team has come off age now. It is good football nation. They were just unlucky to win Nigeria at this stage.” Nigerian Fan said.

But they say Nigerian football is on a roll.

“It’s a very nice feeling. Of course just to remind you we are on an unbeaten road. And the unbeaten road continues and today we have showed the world that we are really African champions.” Nigerian Fan said.

The result may have gone against them. But the Ethiopian fans say they will continue showing their support for the team – by wearing the green and yellow shirt.

“Ethiopia and Nigeria will meet again for a final round of clashes to decide who will head to Brazil for the World Cup. The winner will become one of the 5 African teams which represent Africa in the international game.” Girum Chala, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia said.
