Meseret Defar set for comeback in ’s-Heerenberg

Meseret DefarEthiopia’s Meseret Defar is set to make her comeback from maternity leave with her racing debut over 15km at the Pfixx Solar Montferland Run in ’s-Heerenberg on Sunday

The two-time world and Olympic 5000m champion missed the entirety of the 2014 season due to childbirth and the 32-year-old has been forced to postpone her cancel a number of scheduled racing appearances. Most recently, Defar was supposed to return to action in the Las Vegas Half Marathon last month but was a late scratch due to illness.

Defar is primarily renowned for her track prowess where her sprint finish has brought her numerous accolades over the years but the Ethiopian also boasts one of the fastest times in history for the half marathon at 66:09.

While Defar has never raced over 15km, she was clocked at 47:28 en route to that fast time at the Great North Run in 2013.

Past champions in the Montferland Run include Haile Gebrselassie, Kenenisa Bekele and Lornah Kiplagat while runners of the calibre of Dennis Kimetto, Paula Radcliffe, Constantina Dita and Edna Kiplagat have also graced the event which starts and finishes in ’s-Heerenberg and follows a circuit through the Montferland Forest.
