CECAFA Challenge Cup: Mbonde’s own goal sends Ethiopia to the quarter-finals

Walia Ibex

Hawassa – The Walia Ibex of Ethiopia have to thank Salim Mbonde of Tanzania for helping them reach the quarter-final stage of the CECAFA Challenge Cup after the two teams drew 1-1 here today.

Ethiopia, who advanced to the quarter final stage by finishing as one of the best 3rd placed teams, will face Tanzania in the quarter-final match on Monday.

Tanzania led 1-0 thanks to a header by Simon Musuva (51′) but conceded the own goal in extra time.

Despite playing at home and in front of tens of thousands of supporting fans, the Walias once again displayed a very disappointing performance.

Earlier in the day, Uganda defeated Burundi 1-0 with Frank Kalanda scoring the lone goal in the 67th minute.
