Former Ethiopian Olympian Seifu Tibo seeks our help for a Kidney Transplant

Los Angeles, California – Seifu Mekonnen, affectionately known as “Tibo” by most sports fans, had an illustrious boxing career, including winning the East African heavyweight championship, representing Ethiopia at the 1972 Munich Games in Germany, competing professionally in Kenya and coaching the national team. He had fought and won many battles in the ring in the past, but today Seifu, who is a diabetic, is seeking our help to raise funds to undergo a kidney transplant.

Seifu learned that he has diabetes 25 years ago and he has been taking medicine for it since then. The determination and discipline that he learned in the sport helped him to maintain and enjoy a normal life. However, due to the severity of the disease both of his kidneys have failed and he has been on dialysis treatment since April 2009. Seifu is at present waiting for a kidney transplant. He is hopeful that he will get one soon and is confident that he will resume a productive life again.

Friends of Tibo have been meeting in Los Angeles, California over the last few weeks working on the details to hold a fundraiser for him. EthioSports.com has been informed that a meeting will take place this Saturday (October 23) at Rosalind Restaurant in Los Angeles.

A major fund raiser campaign is planned in February 2011, where numerous Ethiopian musicians, will take part to help Tibo. For more information about Tibo, including his biography, photos, articles, etc.. please visit the website that was created by “Friends of Tibo”  http://seifutibo.org
