The Ethiopian Railways Corporation signed a grant agreement today with a representative of the Chinese Embassy amounting 1.57 billion birr for the construction of a railway academy in Bishoftu town. The construction of the academy is scheduled to begin next year and preparations are already underway to that effect.

The construction will be carried out in two phases and it is said to be completed within two years. Among other things, it incorporates administrative buildings, meeting halls, dining rooms, dormitories, instructors’ residence and the like.

After the completion of the first phase of the construction, the academy will be ready to receive 1000 trainees, according to the Corporation.

It is to be remembered that the corporation spend five million dollars to train 254 operators in China.
