Africa Junior Athletics Championships: Nigeria clinches title, host Ethiopia finishes third

African JuniorAddis Ababa, Ethiopia – Nigeria continued its dominance in athletics as it clinches the 12th edition of the Africa Junior Athletics Championships which ended here on Sunday.

The Nigerian team finished top of the medals table with 12 gold, 8 silver and 7 bronze medals, followed by South Africa who scooped 9 gold, 7 silver and 7 bronze medals and hosts Ethiopia settled for third spot in the final medal standings having garnered 6 gold, 12 silver and 10 bronze medals.

Although Ethiopia finished third in the ranking, it won more medals (28) than the top two finishers – Nigeria (27) and South Africa (23).

Five out of the six gold medals for Ethiopia were won by female athletes.

The six gold medalists are:

Men

5,000m – Yomif Kejelcha

Women

1,500m – Dawit Seyoum

3,000m – Negusse Berus

3,000m Steeplechase – Ethiopia Zewde

5,000m – Etagegne Mamo

5,000m Walk: Behewalaye Bekele

Algeria will host the 13th edition of the championships.
