Tigray Region Generates over 250 million Birr from tourism

Axum ObelisksAddis Ababa,Ethiopia (WIC) – The Tigray Regional State Culture and Tourism Agency said it has earned 250.4 million birr from tourists who visited the region’s attraction sites in the first half of this Ethiopian budget year.

Agency Public Relations Senior Officer, Meseret Haileselassie, told WIC today that the stated sum of revenue was secured from 150, 778 foreign and domestic tourists who visited museum, historical, religious and other attraction sites.

Some 132, 730 of the tourists are domestic, while the remaining tourists are foreigners who came from Europe, Asia, Africa and the rest of the world, he said.

According to Meseret, the number of tourists who visited the region in the reported period increased by 6,000 tourists compared to same period the previous year.

The sector has created jobs for 10,600 people, it was learnt.
