Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Defending champion Genet Yalew and relative unknown Tamirat Tola took notable victories at the 32nd Jan Meda International Cross Country, Ethiopia’s trials for the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa on Sunday (1).

The race of the day with the largest number of participants (389) may have featured some big name athletes, but the winner was little-known Tamirat Tola in a tight-finish over Bonsa Dida.

Yalew leaves illustrious field behind

Like the senior men’s event, the women’s race was also loaded with big name stars including world cross-country silver medallist Hiwot Ayalew, Alemitu Haroye, world 10,000m bronze medallist Belaynesh Oljira, and former world indoor 1500m champion Gelete Burka.

However, victory again went to the 2011 world junior cross-country silver medallist Genet Yalew, whose domestic dominance in the mud shows no sign of slowing.
