Waynishet AbebeWaynishet Abebe’s command of conversational English isn’t particularly strong. Nonetheless, she spoke eloquently when describing the pivotal moment of her Saturday morning on the streets of Richmond.

Abebe, a 27-year-old Ethiopian, rode a late, sustained surge to a comfortable victory in the women’s portion of the Anthem Richmond Marathon. She finished 26 seconds ahead of countrywoman Mahlet Melese and 1:22 ahead of Meagan Nedlo of Salem, Mass.
