Mekele

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (ENA) - A medical research and training center constructed in Mekele town of Tigray State with an outlay of 10 million Birr fund secured from the government of Italy said to build capacity of health professionals.

During the inauguration, Italy Ambassador to Ethiopia Giuseppe Mistretta said the center will provide short and long term trainings for health practitioners to scale up their capacity.

This will help to bridge gaps in quality service provision particularly in child and maternal care, he added.

The Ambassador affirmed that the Embassy will build similar research centers in other parts of the country in the future.

Tigray has gained significant achievements in the health sector through the prevention based health policy, said health bureau deputy head, Ataklty Abreha.

Through the concerted efforts, the state managed to raise the health coverage to 93 percent. Number of expectant women who deliver in health institutions has also reached 56 percent, Ataklty said.

The center will commence its operation by providing the first training for 300 midwives and health practitioners soon.
