Ethiopian tourism sector witnesses 12 % growth last fiscal year

Fasiledes PalaceAddis Ababa, Ethiopia–Ethiopian tourism sector has witnessed a 12 per cent growth on average in the concluded fiscal year, according to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

Ministry Tourism Development and Marketing Directorate Coordinator, Girma Timer, attributed the increase in tourist flow to the promotion works and development of tourist destinations.

The Ministry has also attached prime attention to the development of tourist attraction sites, providing efficient hotel services and increasing tour operators, the coordinator said.

According to Girma, the number of tour and travel agencies has now reached to 310 from only one 13 years ago.

Ethiopia earned over 633 million dollars from the tourism sector in the concluded fiscal year from 600,000 tourists who visited attraction sites in various parts of the country, he said.

He said the number of tourists who visited the country and income earned from the sector has shown a significant increase compared to the previous year.

According to Girma, there is a plan to increase the number of tourists that are expected to visit Ethiopia one million by the end of the Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP) period.

He further said that efforts are also underway to make Ethiopia one of the top five destinations in Africa by the year 2020.
