New York Red Bulls acquire Andre Akpan from Colorado Rapids for conditional draft pick

The New York Red Bulls have acquired forward Andre Akpan from the Colorado Rapids in exchange for a conditional pick in the 2015 MLS Draft, the two clubs announced on Thursday.

“Andre is strong, physical forward with MLS experience and will provide another attacking option for our coaching staff,” said Red Bulls sporting director Andy Roxburgh in a statement. “We are pleased to sign him and look forward to his contributions in the coming season.”

Akpan, 25, has been a member of the Rapids since he was selected in the second round (22nd overall) in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft. During his time in Colorado, he amassed four goals in 29 appearances, including a career-best three goals in 15 appearances in 2012. He was also a member of the Rapids’ MLS Cup-wininng squad in 2010 and the US U-20 squad that reached the quarterfinals of the 2007 U-20 World Cup.

“We would like to thank Andre for what he gave to the Rapids since coming to the team ahead of the 2010 season,” said Rapids technical director Paul Bravo in a statement. “He scored some good goals for us and was a positive presence in the locker room over the last couple seasons, and we wish him the very best in New York.”
