Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – The Ethiopian national football team drew 1-1 with Malawi in its last Group C match to qualify to the quarter-finals.

Oumed Oukuri of Defence Force scored Ethiopia’s equalizer.

There are 3 groups in this year’s CECAFA Challenge Cup. The top 2 teams from each group (6 in all) will automatically advance to the quarter-finals where they will be joined by the Best 2 third place finishers.

After today’s result, Zambia, Rwanda and Malawi have confirmed their qualifications to the quarter-finals by winning their respective groups. They are also joined by Tanzania, which finished as runner-up in Group A.

In Group A, Tanzania beats Burundi 2-0 today to finish runner-up, with Burundi taking 3rd place with 4 points +0 goal difference. Since there are already teams (Zanzibar, Uganda & Ethiopia) who have better goal differences than Burundi, the latter will not qualify as the one of the Best 3rd place finishers.

Ethiopia could end up finishing runner-up from Group C if Kenya defeats Uganda by 2 clear goals.
