Ethiopian Football Team to depart for CECAFA Challenge Cup

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – The Ethiopian national football team will leave for Dar es Salaam, Tanzania tomorrow to take part in the CECAFA Challenge Cup which will kick off here on Sunday.

The CECAFA Challenge Cup will be held from November 27 thru December 12, 2010.

The Walias, as the Ethiopian national are known as, are drawn in Group C with Uganda, Kenya and Malawi. Their first match will be on Monday, November 28 against Uganda.

Coach Iffy Onuora has named 20 players, with the bulk (11) of the squad coming from just two teams: Saint George FC (6) and Dedebit FC (5).

The list includes:

St. George (6): Yared, Samson, Alula, Adane, Abebaw and Mintesenot

Dedebit (5): Jemal & Biniam, Daniel, Mengistu and Getaneh

Dire Dawa City (1): Ashenafi Girma

Awassa City (1): Shimeles

Ethiopian Banks (1): Teshome Oshe

Lideta Nyala (1): Tafesse

Sebeta City (10: Tesfaye

Defence Force (3): Oumed Oukri, Bedasso Hora and Samuel

What makes Onuora’s selection incomprehensible is that St. George, a team currently languishing a t the bottom of the Ethiopian Premier League has 6 players selected while a team like EPL runner-up Ethiopian Coffee has none.
