Ethiopian Female Athletes dominate World’s Best 10k run in Puerto Rico

San Juan, Puerto Rico – Ethiopian female athletes led by Sentayehu Ejigu, dominated the 14th edition of the World’s Best 10k run here yesterday, where they have taken the top 3 spots in the women category.

Ejigu is the first Ethiopian female athlete to win at the race.

Women Category

In the women’s race, Ejigu, the 2010 World indoor 3000m bronze medalist, made a successful debut to win the race in 31:50 ahead of fellow Ethiopians Dire Tune (31:51) and Atsede Habtamu (31:54). Meanwhile, veteran athlete Berhane Adere finished a disappointing 11th in 34:56.

Dire Tune, the 2008 Boston Marathon winner, is a two-time 3rd place finisher here in Puerto Rico.

Men Category

Sammy Kitwara of Kenya won the race followed by Dejen Gebremeskel (27:35) and Lelisa Desisa (28:02) of Ethiopia in second and third places respectively.

Kitwara ran solo after the eighth kilometre to regain his title win in 2009. The runner-up last year, Kitwara won comfortably in 27:35, ahead of Ethiopia’s Dejen Gebremeskel (27:45) and Lelisa Desisa (28:02).

Kenya’s World record holder Daniel Komon (28:05) and 2010 World Cross Country champion Joseph Ebuya (28:07) had to settle for fourth and fifth, respectively, ahead of countryman and defending champion Moses Masai (28:28).
