Los Angeles, California – A fundraising event organized here by friends and fans of former Ethiopian Olympic boxer Seifu Mekonnen “Tibo”, was attended by close to 800 Ethiopians and Friends of Ethiopia, said Fassil Abebe, a member of the organizing committee.
The event, which took place at the beautiful The Proud Bird Restaurant by LAX on Saturday, February 5, 2011, served both to honor Tibo’s life-long legacy to the sport and to also raise money to cover his expenses for kidney transplant procedure.
A group calling itself “Friends of Tibo” has been meeting regularly since September to plan and execute the fund-raising. The group was successful in getting two well known Ethiopian singers Mahmoud Ahmed and Teshome Mitiku as well as Teshome’s brother and great saxophonist Tewdros Mitiku to perform free of charge for this worthy cause.
Tibo attended the event with his mother and two children.
The crowd sang Happy Birthday to Tibo’s daughter, whose birthday happened to be on the same day.
Friends of Tibo also presented him with a plaque for his contribution and long time service to the Ethiopian Community in LA.
