Birmingham, UK – Reigning World indoor 1500m champion Deresse Mekonnen and second-place finisher in the women’s mile Kalkidan Gezahegne will be competing at the Aviva Grand Prix here on February 19, 2011.
The Aviva Grand Prix is part of the IAAF Indoor Permit 2011 series.
Deresse, 23, who won the World Indoor title in 2008 and 2010, legitimize himself as an outstanding athlete when he outsmarted and beat 6-time winner Bernard Lagat in the Wanamaker Mile Run at the 104th Millrose Games in New York this past weekend.
The defending champion won last year’s 1,500m race here in 3:33.10, when Bernard Lagat can only finish fourth.
Kalkidan, who was 18 when she competed in the mile race here last year, is seen as a clear favorite. She will attempt to improve her second-place finish behind fellow Ethiopian Gelete Burka, who won in 4:23.53.
Kalkidan’s time of 4:24.10 set a world junior record then.
