About

EthioSports is an Oregon (USA) based Sports & Tourism Promotion Service connecting the United States, Ethiopia and Africa.

When EthioSports was created back in 1999, its primary function was to provide news and information on soccer and athletics events in Ethiopia. But after more than a decade of valuable service, we felt that it was time to expand our news services and explore new opportunities. So, in February 2013, we decided to add Adventure, Travel & Tourism news sections and focus our attention to connecting the United States with Ethiopia and the rest of Africa in the areas of Sports & Tourism.

Furthermore, we’ve created Sports Tourism News , a new online news magazine dedicated to Sports Tourism in the United States and around the globe.

Athletes of African Descents in US Sports:

Athletes of African descents include recent immigrants and those born and/or raised in the United States. Former Houston Rockets’ star Dikembe Mutombo (DR Congo); New York City Marathon winner Meb Keflezighi (Eritrean-American); Steve Nash (South Africa/Canada) of the Los Angeles Lakers; All- American Defensortland Timbers, Nicholas Batum (French/Cameroon) of the Portland Blazers, Luo Deng (Sudan/UK) and Joakim Noah of the Chicago Bulls, whose family heritage includes Cameroon, Sweden and France, are a few examples.

There are thousands of athletes of African descents competing in NCAA Tournaments, NFL, NBA, WNBA, MLS, and hundreds more come here to the US every year to compete in track and field and other sports.

African Adventure

Africa is blessed with natural beauty and great landscapes, which are suitable for a range of outdoor activities, including walking, fishing, bird watching, mountain and rock climbing, white-water rafting, kayaking, canoeing, water skiing, trekking, caving and paragliding. However the link between tourism and sport activities in the continent has not adequately been promoted.

Africans in the US:

  • Population = 1.6 million (immigrationpolicy.org)
  • Annual Purchasing Power = $50 billion  (www.ethnictrends.info)

The number of Africans living and working in the United States is estimated to be around 1.4 million, and they commanding $50 billion in annual purchasing power. They enjoy great adventure and attend numerous sports activities and often travel both within the US and to Africa. EthioSports will serve as a great platform for sports events organizers & travel-related companies to explore this niche & untapped market.
