The Armed Forces and the Police have always been the backbone of Ethiopian athletics. They have produced numerous world class athletes such as Abebe Bikila and Mamo Wolde (Royal Body Guards), Miruts Yifter (Air Force), Haile Gebreselassie and Derartu Tulu (Police), to name a few. But in the last few years, some government owned institutions and a relatively small number of former athletes have created their own clubs.
 
Mugher (Oromiya Region)- Kenenisa Bekele, Tesfaye Jifar, Tesfaye Tola and Gezahagne Abera, and national marathon coach Tolosa Kotu.
 
Omedla (Police)- The club, which was formed in 1948 got its name from a tree known for its solid roots and found in the Metekel region of Gojjam province, western Ethiopia. The club's reputation as a major track and field team dates back to the early years when the likes of Colonel Legesse Beyene, Colonel Aberra Ayano, Lieutenant Tegegn Bezabeh, Megersa Tulu and Kebede Balcha dominated the middle & long distance runs. Today, Omedla is home to such world class runners as:

The club has also dominated the domestic competitions where it has won the Abebe Bikila Memorial Marathon race four years in a row in both men's and women's categoriesy, the Jan Meda International Cross Country races twice, and the national title three times.
