Ethiopia Launches National Costed Roadmap To End Child Marriage, FGM

Addis Ababa, August 14, 2019  – President Sahle-Work Zewde has officially launched the National Costed Roadmap to end child marriage and female genital mutilation (FGM).

Senior Ethiopian government officials, including Ms. Adele Khod, UNICEF Representative in Ethiopia, attended the launching ceremony held this morning.

In her remark, President Sahle-Work stressed the need for commitment and resources to ensure the implementation of the road map.

The implementation of the roadmap is led by the Ministry of Women, Children and Youth in coordination with Ministries of Health, Education, Finance, Labour and Social Affairs, and the Attorney General’s office.

Speaking at the event, Yalem Tsegay, Minister of Women, Children and Youth said the roadmap will enable Ethiopia to deliver on the commitment it made to end child marriage and FGM.

Ms. Adele Khod for her part said the Government of Ethiopia made a commitment in 2014 to end child marriage and FGM by 2025.

Ethiopia is among the top five countries with the highest burden of child marriages globally, she indicated.

According to her, Ethiopia will need to increase the current pace of progress seven times faster to end child marriage and female genital mutilation by 2030.
