Oilseeds Export Generates 2.4 Bln USD in First GTP

Addis Ababa (ENA) – Oilseeds export has generated 2.4 billon US dollars in the first Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP) period, Ministry of Trade said.

Crop Production Marketing Director with the Ministry, Mulugeta Mohammed, told ENA, the stated sum was obtained from the export of 1.5 million tons of oilseeds.

Ethiopia has earned 477 million US dollars annual revenue on average by exporting 302, 598 tons of oilseeds during the past five years, he said.

Mulugeta said the volume of oilseeds and the revenue it generated has shown an 8.6 per cent and a16 per cent annual growth, respectively.

According to him, sesame took the lion’s share by generating 93.6 percent of the total revenue.

Ethiopia stands fourth in sesame production in the world next to India, China and Sudan.

China, Israel, Turkey and Jordan are the leading Ethiopia’s oilseeds export destinations.

Ethiopia is working to increase its oilseeds export by 10 percent in the second GTP period, the director stated.
