Mengistu Worku Cup Final: St. George vs Defence Force

St George EPLAddis Ababa, Ethiopia - The first final match of the Fasil Tekalegn era at St George takes place on Sunday when his side faces off against Defence Force (Mekelakeya) in the Ethiopian Knockout Cup.

Making their sixth appearance in the Ethiopian knockout cup final match, 2006 winners Defence will travel to Addis Ababa Stadium to face the 2010/11 cup victors St George.

St George are the most storied franchise in the history of the Ethiopian Football Federation tourney with nine wins. Additionally, they have a near-spotless record against Defence, dropping only three outcomes in 17 matches.

Only Tesfaye Alebachew is out for St George, but Degu Debebe and Abebaw Butako are unlikely to feature after playing on Sunday. Defender Alula Girma has recovered from the ankle injury he sustained against Nigeria last weekend and is available to face Defense in the final at Addis Ababa Stadium.

Minyahel Teshome and Behailu Asefa may wear St George’s Jersey for the first time as they signed from the premier league champions Dedebit last year.

St George last lifted the Knock out Cup back in 2010/11 after seeing off Muger in the final.

The 2010/11 Ethiopian knock out cup , which was formerly known as Ethiopia Cup, was renamed Mengistu Worku Cup in memory of the greatest Ethiopian and St George soccer player of all time, who passed away on December 16, 2010.
