CAF Confederation Cup: St George out after defeat to Stade Malien

St. GeorgeEthiopian giants St George are out of the 2013 CAF Orange Confederations Cup after suffering a 1-0 defeat away to Stade Malien in Bamako.

St George badly needed a win or a draw to brighten their hopes of qualifying for the semifinals as the second best side in Group A.

The win pushed Stade Malien to second place with seven points behind CS Sfaxien who are already through to the knock out stage.

The home side needed a late 83rd minute goal through in-form Lamine Diawara to go above Etoile du Sahel who drew 1-1 with table leaders CS Sfaxien on Saturday.

Diawara also scored in Stade Malien’s surprise 1-0 win away to Etoile du Sahel last month.

The loss means St George remain with three points before they face Etoile du Sahel on September 21st in the last Group game.

Victory for Etoile du Sahel in Addis Ababa and a loss for the Malian side against CS Sfaxien will see another Tunisian side storm the last four.
