Qatar Airways to introduce flights to Ethiopia

Qatar AirwaysQatar Airways is to start flying to Ethiopia from September 18 as it continues its expansion around the globe.

The Doha–Addis Ababa operation will operate three times per week using a 144-seat, two-class Airbus A320 aircraft with 12 seats in business and 132 in economy.

The Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa will become Qatar’s 20th destination in Africa, and is part of the carrier’s aggressive expansion plan, which has seen the company order nine B777-300ERs.

Qatar has also added two flights to its Doha-Amman route, bringing the total number of its weekly Jordan services to nine.

The carrier said the extra capacity will improve connections from Amman to around 100 cities across the airline’s global network, offering passengers more choice with further convenience and flexibility to their travel plans.

CEO Akbar Al Baker added: “As part of Qatar Airways’ ever-expanding route map, a key pillar is to also evaluate existing routes and increase capacity where there is passenger demand.”

Qatar has already launched six new destinations this year: Gassim (Saudi Arabia), Najaf (Iraq), Phnom Penh (Cambodia), Chicago (USA), Salalah (Oman) and Basra (Iraq).

Several other routes will also be introduced over the next few months: Sulaymaniyah, Iraq (August 20), Chengdu, China (September 3), Clark International Airport, Philippines (October 27) and Philadelphia (April 2, 2014).
