St. George FCAddis Ababa, Ethiopia – Ethiopian side St. George crushed visiting Jamhuri of Zanzibar 5-0 on Sunday in the return leg of the 2013 Orange CAF Champions League. The result pushed St. George to the next round with an aggregate 8-0 result.
Five goals from Alula Girma, Joseph, Abebaw Butako, Shimeles Bekele and Adane Girma gave St. George an absolute domination all through to the end. Adane came on as a substitute in mid second half after recovering from the sustained injury at the recently concluded Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.
St. George Head Coach, German Michael Kruger who was wary of the Zanzibar side in the second leg expressed delight with the result.
“My boys dominated the play right from kick-off. In the first half, our lead was limited to 1-0. That shows our finishing was not that good as the second half. In the second half, we managed to score four more goals.”
Adane Girma who played for the first time after he limped out in the game against Burkina Faso in South Africa remarked: “I have been sidelined for the last one month due to injury. I began training with ball last Monday and I’m happy to have scored on my return. This tells me that I am in good form. I was very much motivated and agitated when my side were in a 2-0 lead when I got in.”
Head Coach of Jamhuri, Hamad Mzee was disappointed but admitted St Georges were better. “We managed to finish the first half with a close 1-0 difference. But in the second half it was not possible to go that way. That was really disappointing but we conceded defeat to a team that played quite well,” he said.
