Ethiopian Airlines registering over 25 percent annual growth: CEO

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia ( ENA) –  The Ethiopian Airlines said it has been registering an over 25 percent annual growth on average in revenue, passenger and cargo transport. In an exclusive interview with ENA, Ethiopian CEO, Tewolde Gebremariam said in 2004 EC, the Airline had secured one billion Birr revenue.

According to him, Ethiopian made 732 million Birr profit during the reported period. He said the Airline had transported 4.8 million people and 182,000 tons cargo during the reported period, which shows a 22 percent and 16 percent increase respectively compared to the previous year.

Tewolde said Ethiopian is working hard to expand its destinations and sustain its leading role in the sector by opening new hubs in various African countries and increase the number of its modern fleet. To achieve this, Ethiopian has reached agreement with Zambia with a view to using Lusaka as its hub for South Africa, he said.

Tewolde said Ethiopian is expected to receive 13 additional aircrafts in 2013, which he said will boost its services.

Currently, the Airline has 58 operating fleet, which provide international and domestic services. Ethiopian made its maiden international flight to Cairo in 1946 and now provides dependable services to 70 international destinations. Ethiopian is a multi-award winner for its commitment and contributions towards the development and growth of the African aviation industry and in recognition of its distinguished long-haul operations enhanced by the introduction of new routes and products.
