Veteran sport journalist Demissie Damte passes away

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - Ethiopian Radio and Television Agency’s (ERTA) veteran sport journalist Demissie Damte passed away on Monday at the age of 60, while receiving treatment at Police Hospital in Addis Ababa.

Demissie had been attending medical treatment for the past three years in Ethiopia and abroad. He had received treatment in Bangkok in connection with the illness of his eyes due to diabetes before two years, and received another kidney treatment in India recently.

The veteran journalist was hospitalized in Addis Ababa Police Hospital for two months before he passed away on Monday, 12 November 2012 at 3:00 pm local time.

Demissie had worked as a freelance sport journalist for Ethiopian Radio from his birth place, Dire Dawa before he was employed as a full time sport journalist.

Demissie had been serving in ERTA for 33 years as radio sport journalist for which he was widely known by the public. He had worked relentlessly for the growth of sport in Ethiopia.

Demissie reported Atlanta, Athens and Beijing Olympics to Ethiopian audience from those cities.

He was married and a father of three daughters.
