Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The Ethiopian national soccer team defeated Sudan 2-0 here today to qualify for the African Nations Cup in South Africa on away goal advantage (5-5).
It was 31 ago in Libya that Ethiopia last participated in the African Nations Cup.
Adane Girma & Saladine Seid scored the two goals.
Here is the BBC match update
-
1552:Â What an amazing tie this has been between Ethiopia and Sudan. Ten goals shared over two legs, both sides adopting an all-out attacking mentality, and it looks like Ethiopia are going to edge it and book their place in South Africa. Wonderful stuff!1549:Â Iffy Onuora, former Ethiopia coach
-
“It was Saladin – again – who scored that vital goal, he can prepare to be elevated to national hero status if Ethiopia can just hang on. We’re into the last minute!
-
1541:Iffy Onuora, former Ethiopia coach
“It is going to be a nerve-shredding last 10 minutes for the whole of Ethiopia. The whole country will go crazy if the team can hang on and qualify for next year’s tournament in South Africa.”
-
1535:Â GOAL -Â Ethiopia 2-0 Sudan
That’s a crucial score from Ethiopia, who double their lead on the day and are now ahead on aggregate by virtue of the away goals rule.
Iffy Onuoura’s reaction says it all: “Dust off those passports, a first finals in 30 years beckons!”
-
1533:ÂGOAL -Â Ethiopia 1-0 Sudan
Ethiopia take the lead through Adane Girma. He’s an excellent attacking full-back, who wouldn’t look out of place in a top Championship side in England, says Iffy Onuotra.
That goal has set the tie up for a rousing last 20 minutes at the National stadium in Addis. Ethiopia trail 4-5 on aggregate.

What a game!!!! Well played and well deserved. Congratulations and good luck for 2013.
This is what I have been saying….This day has proven that Ethiopian team, unlike the Sudanees has shown to the world winning is possible with a fair play-with no corruption.
Who can tell me if the cameronean refree who gave those penalities in the Sudan in the first Match? Do you think he will stand with the guilitness if he has, offcourse, the brain to feel gulitiness.? The Sudan football federation should learn foot ball can be beaten only through a play in the field.
I wish FIFA or CAF would dismiss that refree and down with all bullshits who disturb the real football. Learn from Ethiopian Team how to win through clean foot ball.
BRAVO Ethiopian Team. History has changed its gear…FORWARD!!!!!!!!!!!
No words however, bigggggggg CONGRATULATION that is it.
Congratulations! I am speech less. This is astonishing history. We are proud of you. I am so sorry for not seeing Adane Girma in one of European teams or English premier leagues. I hope to hear your soccer skill and career going beyond Africa. Saladin and all the team members were and are excellent. Well done! I wish you fabulous victory in African Nations Cup of South Africa. Victory to the under 17 heroes too!
It’s crazy! I wouldn’t have imagined in wildest dream Ethiopia could make it to the final….. I was at a super market when I saw the result and it drive me like crazy!… Wow! No words!….. We will remember this day!
It’s a huge step for the nations football. And the biggest task now on wards is keeping the success! Don’t be fooled! Even Cape Verde with only 500,000 population has qualified and pls dont be taken away by this success but let’s make it a foundation for our future football cliax.
VIVA ETHIOPIA !!!
NO WORD TO SAY
NO WORD TO CONVEY
FEELING INSIDE I HAVE FOR YOU … ETHIOPIA !!!
Congratulation to all Ethiopian people, wishing all the best to National team …
