Benshangul-Gumuz to Host World Tourism Day

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia — The Ministry of Culture and Tourism announced that the World Tourism Day will be marked at national level in the Benshangul-Gumuz State, September 24-30, 2012 with various programmes.

Minister Amin Abdulkadir told journalists yesterday that the Day will be marked with the theme: “Tourism and Sustainable Energy: Powering for Sustainable Development” with different activities, among others, symposiums, visit to various places including the Grand Renaissance Dam and contests.

The Day is marked with the objective of creating awareness on the role of tourism in economic, social and political development. It also contributes to the development and conservation of various cultures, values and history, among others, of nations and nationalities, the Minister added.

“Marking the Day will play an important role in promoting domestic tourism for it has been observed in the various states since 2000 EC.”

The Day is marked for the 33rd and 25th time in the world and in Ethiopia respectively.

World Tourism Day is marked on September 27 to raise awareness on the role of tourism within the international community and to demonstrate how it affects social, cultural, political and economic values worldwide.

At the international level, the Day will be marked in Maspalomas, Gran Canaria, with the theme: “Tourism and Energetic Sustainability.”
