More than 50 female golfers headed to Srinagar last weekend to participate in India’s inaugural women’s golf tournament and promote tourism in the Kashmir Valley.
Organisers hoped the competition, held at the picturesque Royal Springs Golf Course (RSGC), would persuade tourists to visit the area instead of flocking to popular European destinations.
Netu Bansal Agarwal, of the Delhi-based Golf Boutique, explained: “The concept is to make RSGC a preferred holiday destination for golfers. Why go to Europe when you have such a beautiful golf course around and with all kinds of facilities?”
Agarwal added that the area’s favourable weather conditions and the “excellent” turf on offer at the RSGC made it the ideal place to hold the first-ever domestic women’s golf tournament, with more in the pipeline.
“We are planning to organise such tournaments in different states throughout the country. We thought it would be a good idea to start from Srinagar.”
