Steeplechaser Birhan Getahun slams hurdle; leaves in wheelchair

LONDON (USA TODAY) — There is no give in the hurdles in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Birhan Getahun of Ethiopia found that out the hard way on Friday.

In the homestretch on the final lap, Getahun got out out of stepped and slammed straight into the hurdle, crashing hard to the track.

He lay on his back briefly, tried to get up and finish, but ultimately was unable to.

The crowd cheered as he tried to get up and finish.

He was taken off the track in a wheelchair.
