Institute confident to achieve a billion dollar textile export

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (WIC) – Ethiopian Textile Industry Development Institute (ETIDI) is confident that the country would achieve a one billion dollar textile export by the end of the Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP) period.

Ethiopia secured close to 44 million dollars in the first six months of the budget year from export of textile and textile products. This is a record 110 percent growth and 23 million dollars more compared to the previous budget year.

“The growth is indicative that we can, indeed, achieve our GTP textile export target of one billion dollars,” Fekadu Ethiopia, Corporate Communications Expert at the Institute, said.

Ethiopian Government is paying special attention to develop the textile sector pursuant to the five year plan. And the expert said the Institute is giving support to players in the textile industry.

“We are providing the necessary support to enable the construction of new and expansionary textile industry projects so that they join the industry immediately,” Fekadu told WIC.

According to the expert, the institute provides support in meeting standard qualities and providing various capacity building trainings, among others.

The expert said with the support of the Institute, international benchmarking is currently underway in textile factories.

More and more investors are now showing keen interest to boost textile items exports, which are likely to fetch revenue of one billion dollars during the plan period.

Leading exporters include, Aika Addis Textile and Investment Group, Almeda Textile, Kombolcha Textile Share Company, Elsie Addis Textile Factory, NovaStar Garment plc and Ma Textile and Garment Factory.
