INTRA-AFRICA Meteorology System Exco meets in Addis

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The Intra-Africa Meteorology System (AFRIMETS) Executive Committee is holding its eight meeting here to endorse the African integrated meteorological road map and discuss ways of strengthening its activity.

The road map is also significant for strengthening regional integration and trade between African countries.

Ethiopian National Meteorology Institute General Director Wondwosen Fisseha said at the opening of the meeting Wednesday that Africa needed to establish a strong meteorological institute to boost productivity and increase its competence at the global level.

To this end, he added, establishing the road map was essential to create internationally acceptable meteorology and facilitate trade.

He also said the meeting provided conducive opportunities for the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and partners to visit Ethiopian meteorological laboratories and intensify their support.

The meeting is expected to assess the strength and weakness of countries in issues related to meteorology, share best experiences and propose an action plan for potential donors.

AFRIMETS/UNIDO has the objective to develop regional meteorology structures in support of regional meteorology efforts in Africa and developing technical capabilities and competencies to overcome technical barriers to trade.

Participants from Kenya, South Africa, Gabon, Tunisia and Germany, among others, are attending the meeting, organized by UNIDO in collaboration with AFRIMETS.
