Ashenafi Tadele wins inaugural “Tour to the Nile Source” cycling race

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – A new cycle race named “Tour to the Nile Source” has been launched here in Addis Ababa. The race was organized by the Addis Ababa Sport Commission and Addis Ababa Cycling Federation of Addis Ababa City Administration and the Amhara Regional State. The inauguration was attended by government officials and cycling veterans including the prominent figure of Ethiopian cycling, Geremew Denboba.

The tour covered a total of 623Km starting from Addis Ababa on January 31st and ending in Bahir Dar on the 5th of February.

A total of 30 riders representing Addis Ababa and Amhara participated in the tour. The first two days were more relaxed while the remaining three proved to be very competitive races.  The tour featured challenging landscapes including the fascinating Abay (Nile) Gorge.

The tour is planned to be annual cycling event with the aim of developing and promoting the sport in Ethiopia.

Zecolina Construction was the main sponsor of the event while additional financial support was provided by other local sponsors.

Race route

Day one: Addis Ababa – Goha Tsion (186 Km)

Day two: Goha Tsion – Debremarkos (114 Km)

Day three: Debremarkos – Enjibara (135 Km)

Day four: Enjibara – Bahir Dar (128 Km)

Day five: Circuit race in Bahir Dar (60 Km)
