Addis Ababa - Tom Saintfiet, Ethiopia’s newly appointed football coach started his tenure with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Sudan in a friendly but rainy match played here today, reported Ermias Amare.

The Walias, as the Ethiopian team are known, led 1-0 at half time thanks to a goal by Chala Diriba of Defence Force, but the Nile Crocodiles of Sudan responded with two goals of their own after the interval.

The heavy rain didn’t help the Walias who were playing a 4-4-2 system, with a great number of players playing in unfamiliar positions.

The real test of coach Saintfiet will be come next week when the Walias face Nigeria for the crucial Orange 2012 African Nations Cup Group B qualifier game here in the capital.

Ethiopia’s Line-up: (4-4-2):

Goalkeeper: – Yidinekachew Kidane (Defence Force)

Defenders: Alula Girma, Degu Debebe and Abebaw Butako (all 3 from St George) and Aynalem Hailu (Defence Force).

Midfielders: G/Michael Yacob (Sidama Coffee), Asrat Megerssa (EEPCO), Shimelis Bekele (Awassa City) and Chala Diriba (Defense),

Forwards: Adane Girma (St George), Temesgen Tekle (Dedebit)
Second half substitutions:- G/Michael by Berhanu Bogale (Dedebit FC), Temesgen by Ashenafi Adem (Hawassa City) and Chala by Mengistu Assefa (Dedebit FC)

The FA is always the problem in Africa, but effort from the players matters a lot and the support from the fans. you have to understand the every team has their learning period even the so called nigerians.

  4. Abzi says:

Abu good point mate, people need to stop puting the national team down. They are doing their best but the problem is the federation, it has always been like that.

Can someone please tell me where i can watch the game online and what time is it on?

  5. denboba says:

The test of foot ball comes with its unpredictablness. In some instances, the best teams are defeted by the seemingly weak ones. For instance,Cameron and Nigeria has proved that winning isn’t only for the few who have all. However,in some instance Like our national team, tommorow’s game, the result is almost known. It is 100% sure that we will not win Nigeria the way they won us,and everything else is just a show.I agree with “CHO” in your comments except the “DAM” staff. I guess you are joking!

Any way good luck for our national team!

  7. abu says:

ere…..why do we like pointing fingers to the players. Why don’t we all ask our selves before we blame somebody else? These players are better than 80mil. People. if you think you are better than them why don’t you show us something., why we like to criticize? Who are we? What did we contribute to the football of this country? For me I will still stand with my national team whether they win or loose 40-0 or even more. Pointing out weakness and working together is more effective than blaming peoples who represent a nation. One more question what are we good at? If we have a competition in every thing we do .we don’t even get close result with the exception of long distance (thanks to God, nature etc..) Good luck!!! Our national team!!!!

  8. babu says:

It is a forgone conclusion that green eagle trounce the cluless Ethiopian Walyas….(.Ha.Ha walyas melke tefu besem yedgeefu)4 nil.Am not blaming the poor skinny players ,but every thing boils down with the power that be.Those guys who clinged to power are there to see destroyed not the Ethiopian foot ball alone but also Ethiopia as an entity. So the defeat is not a big deal to them.Period.

  9. lefty says:

Yesterday nigeria defeated argentinas second team 4-1 I don’t know what that will mean for the game with us. But because the problems with eff, new coach, and a resurrected nigerian team it will be very difficult for ethiopia to win. Change is badly needed with EFF

  10. yared says:

    i dreamed that ethiopia 0-0nigeria

  11. Zeku Analyst says:

Just woke up from a dream guys. I dreamed that Saintlet was fired and the EFF hired me for the job. And I took the boys to the final of the FIFA World Cup!

Unfortunately, in the world cup final, we lost 6-0 to Nigeria.

  12. Abzi says:

After reading the comment here that we won 6-0 I fell a sleep and I had a dream too, I was selected for the national team and I scored 5 of the 6 goals.

  13. Andnew says:

somebody told me that Saladin is included in the new team…i don’t know how true this is…if it is true i feel happy but still i have no information about Fikru tefera who will…please don’t forget to select the very importants!!!

  14. Andnew says:

Dear 6-0, your dream is a dream against dream…you have seen an unthinkable 6 bolls in the net of the supper eagles…I’m not saying that is totally impossible but it is a bit difficult mission…but there is always one thing very important in which we all should believe”Hard work”…if our team members do this Nigeria is not Barcelona ….so believe in that at home we are Fc Barcelona

  15. Tazabeo V says:

6-0 that’s what we call kezchet sort of a nightmare.

  16. BadmeIsEthiopian says:

Your dream is nightmare only, or your dream is the reverse of it.
Every ethiopian wants to good result, but only desires …
    as you know our footballers…
anyways….to have any dream is your right, and incase if your dream comes true, honestly i will come to addis from Badme( more than 1500 kilo meters) to say GREAT to our team.
wish Good luck to Ethiopian side

  17. 6-0 says:

Last night in my dream, I have seen Ethiopia national soccer team beating; Nigeria 6-0. I hope it was not a mirage( I’m pretty sure Waliyan scored six goals, but I’m not exactly sure about Nigerian score against us though). Even though the National team lost to Sudan, I wont stop supporting them. Believe it or not, most of the time my dream is true. If I dream something very serious without any doubt, it will happen. I’m writing this from deeper understanding of my real dreams. You guys might think, it is impossible to score six goals against Nigeria because they are better than us technically, mentally, physically, emotionally and so on, but this will change in the coming up game; Ethiopian players will shock super eagles. Waliyans are so hungary for “change.”

  18. Muna says:

    Chu,

What kind of non sense are you sputtering? Dream blue nile dam my ass … how is that have anything to do with soccer?

And btw, just because you know some random English words, doesn’t mean you have to use it when it doesn’t fit what you’re talking about.

  19. Badme says:

I am not going to blame the federation or the coach, no matter the coach is ethiopian footballer are worthless, they are not committed to win, dont have encouragement they are always the looser.
the main problem of the football in Ethiopia is not stadium, it is not a matter to have a well world wide standard stadium to be a good footballler, these who are best on the world( especially Africans, south americans dont get/have good stadiums, it is more or less like our country, but the difference is that our country players dont have target to be come best footballer. they will play tomorrow, they drink alchols tonight and get out with woman every day.
this is a fact and everyone knows it….
so everyone here and there … what shall we do? do we have import some players? or should we have send some people out so that they can grow and train there?…
    ke and yetenadede ethiopiawi

  20. getu says:

I don’t think that we won the third african cup or the east-african cup with foreign coaches(I don’t mean that foreign couches are worthless),but the psychology that belives, the best is imported, should be changed. Our culture is shifting from food dependence to everything dependence, and it eventualy erodes our self-esteam and compitivness. I guess, giving similar payment to ethiopian coaches, and providing training in the best training instituites may bring a result through time.If not, calling Mr.x and Firing Mr.y will not change our goal addiction!!
We are ever eager to see Ethiopian foot ball renaissance!! But when!!! Start it now or never!!!

  21. chu says:

Well, basically and technicaly ethiopia is not ready for soccer. Even there is no good looking stadium. Soccer is based on the ecnomey. Right now the cost of the money to prepare the national team can help to feed tons of people who don’t have any things due to the this critical or increase of prices through out the globe or the world, it is not only in ethiopia it is all over the world! So, due to several economical problems our soccer team is not enough to show the that several pepole expecting. Yes indeed they are to participate in the fifa game, what I am thinking is the federation might get money from fif if the ethiopian team just only partipate, it does not matter if the ethiopian team win or not it is hard to win, because the team is not enough in many directions such as like, technically, physically and psycologically. It take times, most probablly after the dream blue nile ecletrical dam the ethiopian national team will be borne again. Right now they are just participating and in this way annually the fedaratinon will get money from fifa. So, for the time being and till dream come true, let us stop talking about the deadly alive of our natinal soccer team, it is hardly alive!! It take time people!

  22. amare says:

to have a friendly match is good.but how can the federation evaluate the coach? we will see the next match.

  23. mantoman says:

It’s the same old news, Ethiopian national team lose. No matter who the coach for this national team, the result is the same. They keep loosing. I reather follow the Ethiopian women team, who made the country proud. Finally, please fire the people who are really responsible for this embarrassing result of this team (The Federation) This people running the Federation are a complete fraud, power trusty individuals, who only care about self-recognition. I blame them for the collapse of the country football.
