Ethiopia to establish “Conference Tourism” Office

Addis Ababa – Ethiopia will soon setup a special office that will be responsible for the “Conference Tourism” industry in the country, said Haile Mariam Dessalegn, Deputy Vice-President and Minister of Foreign Affairs, according to the weekly Amharic newspaper, the Ethiopian Reporter.

Addressing journalists at a press conference organized here by WAF Marketing & Promotion Enterprise, the minister said that the conference tourism industry has shown tremendous growth over the past few years, that the creation of a special office was necessary to ensure demands are met and the country generates appropriate revenues from the industry.

He pointed out that a final decision is being worked out as to which ministry the office will eventually report.

The minister pointed out that Addis Ababa can’t meet the high demand for conference tourism and efforts are being made to expand and grow facilities in various other cities of the country.

Dessalegn cited the visits of Princess Märtha Louise of Norway, India’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the 5-nation Leaders and Prime Ministers’ meeting here in the capital as some of the highlights of upcoming events in the country.
