St. George of Ethiopia needs fire power to oust Recreativo de Calaa

Addis Ababa – St. George FC, Ethiopia’s representative in the CAF Champions League, will need fire power when it faces Recreativo de Calaa of Angola in the return leg match here on Sunday.

St. George’s fans hope to see their team avenge their 2-0 loss in Angola two weeks ago and advance to the next round. But to many of these fans, the team’s performance this year leaves them with very uneasy feeling.

The Saints have won 9 of the past 12 Ethiopian Premier League Championships, and they are known for their high-scoring power, but this has been lacking this year. In 12 league matches, the team scored just 12 goals but conceded 15 goals.

The club is currently in 13th place in the Ethiopian Premier League with just 3 wins in 12 matches. It drew 5 times and shockingly lost 4 times, when it only registered 5 losses in 86 games over the past 3 years.

However, there are those who say that the team is showing relative progress and will soon reverse the situation. They noted that after losing 4 of its 6 first league matches in which it conceded 11 goals, the team hasn’t lost a match in its last 6 encounters, scoring 6 goals and conceding just 4.

Meanwhile, Agencia Angola Press (Angop) reported that Recreativo da Caála’s coach, Vítor Manuel, said he is worried with his players anxiety level before Sunday’s match against Saint George of Ethiopia.

Despite of this, the coach told the press that he believes that his team is likely to win in Ethiopia, since his players face the match without fear and tension.

Recreativo will travel to Addis Ababa Friday, two days before the match.
