Demesse Tefera of Ethiopia wins Carsbad Marathon

Carlsbad, California – Demesse Tefera of Ethiopia won the Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Marathon men’s division in 2:27.28, followed by Shingirai Badza of Zimbabwe (2:29.11) and California native Sergio Gonzalez (2:30.28) respectively here on Sunday.

Demesse was slated to run in the half-marathon race but decided to switch to the full marathon the day before the race claiming that he wasn’t physically prepared because of the cold weather in Washington DC, where he trains.

Meanwhile in the Half-Marathon women’s category, Jane Kibii of Kenya finished first with Misikir Demissie and Hiruth Mandefro of Ethiopia coming in second and third positions respectively.

More than 8,500 runners and walkers from 48 states and 11 foreign countries participated in Sunday’s Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Marathon & Half Marathon.

The Carlsbad Marathon works with 19 official charities to help raise funds and awareness for their organizations.
