Tigabu Gebremariam wins Ethiopia’s second bronze medal at 5th African Cycling Championships
Kigali, Rwanda – Tigabu Gebremariam won Ethiopia’s second silver medal at the 5th African Cycling Championships here yesterday when he finished third in the 33km individual time trial race. Meanwhile fellow compatriot Stefanos Gebreselassie finished 4th (51:56) in the same race.
The Ethiopian cycling team comprising of Misgena Kindeye, Solomon Bittew and Goytom Mebratu won a silver medal after clinching a third place (57:20) finish in the 40km team trial race, when the championships got underway on Wednesday.
The Eriteam team featuring Daniel Teklehaimanot, Meron Russom, Tesfai Tekli and Frekalsi Debesai won the gold in 54:12, followed by championship favorite South Africa (56:31).
Eritrea’s victory is seen as a big surprise since most people had expected South Africa to win. South Africa, however, have sent a young team to gain experience since they have already qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games and their top cyclists are not present in Kigali.
The third and final stage of the championship will take place on Sunday with a 144km road race.
There are also two stages – a 17.2km individual time trial and a 60km road race – for female riders.
