Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The desecrated tombstone of Ethiopia’s greatest athlete Abebe Bikila was finally restored and officially unveiled here today in the presence of his family members and friends.

In March 2007, a group of unknown individuals entered the Joseph Cemetery and desecrated the tombstones of the two-time Olympic marathon winner Abebe Bikila and that of his partner and Mexico Olympic gold medalist Mamo Wolde.

Ethiopian Athletics Federation President, Bisrat Gashaw Tena officially unveiled the new tombstone, which was built at a cost of 350,000 Birr.

Abebe’s tombstone was built 35 years ago by Abeselom Yihdego, long standing athletics supporter, philanthropist and owner of Keste Damena Foam Factory.

There are no words as to when Mamo Wolde’s tombstone will be restored.
