Mulu Seboka sets new record for Melbourne Marathon

Melbourne, Australia– Mulu Seboka of Ethiopia won the Melbourne Marathon women’s race in a record time of 2:32.20 here today.  

The 27-year old Ethiopian national team member, who lives near Addis Ababa, lowered the time set by three-time Olympian Sue Hobson in 1999 by 67 seconds. 

Mulu’s previous victories include  Toronto (2008) and Mumbai (three times) and the Perth City to Surf marathon in August.  

Kenyan Cattle Herder 

In the men’s category, Japhat Kipkrir, a 29-year old Kenyan cattle herder, also sets a new course when he finished first in 2:11.04, four seconds faster than US marathon great Billy Rodgers recorded in 1982.  

Last year’s winner Asnake Fekadu, of Ethiopia, was second in 2:15.31, with fellow Ethiopian and South Melbourne runner Geleta Wondwosen finishing fourth(2:18.43).
